Detroit Historical Society goes behind the scenes of the David Whitney Building!

Wealthy lumber baron David Whitney passed along his fortune and properties to his son, David Charles Whitney in 1900. The younger Whitney then paid for the redesign of the old Grand Circus Building into the David Whitney building, opened in 1915. The 19 story Neo-Renaissance style skyscraper held shops and offices until business began to decline in the 1960s, leading to foreclosure in 2000. Thanks to millions of dollars of renovations in the last 25 years, the David Whitney Building has been restored to its former glory.
