Tickets go on sale to the public on 3/19/2025 10:00:00 AM. Members, log in to purchase early tickets!
John Ward Westcott was born into a prominent Michigan shipping family in 1848. After receiving his masters papers at 20, the young captain set out to solve communication problems between shipping companies and their vessels. The marine reporting agency John founded, J.W. Westcott, would field destination and dock information from shipping companies and deliver them to passing vessels from his dock on Belle Isle, eventually becoming an official U.S. Postal Service mail boat in 1948.
Please note, we will not be traveling on the water or leaving the dock during this tour as there is limited capacity on the boats. Due to the nature of the boats, they only allow access on foot, and we will ask visitors to use their discretion on entering and exiting the boat for their safety. The majority of the tour will take place off of the boats.
