As Declaration of Independence was drafted, Detroit was already a century-old settlement shaped by French, British, and Native influences. Though the American Revolution brought independence, Detroit remained under British control until 1796—its diverse residents reflecting the complex loyalties of a region that played a quiet but important role in the conflict.

Presented by Bill Pringle, DHS Curator of Collections.

Part of the Detroit Historical Society Quad Anniversary Lecture Series.

The Detroit Historical Museum is open 5-8pm with free admission.
