Skirmish, Siege, and Surrender: Detroit in 1812
Detroit is the only U.S. city ever surrendered to a foreign power. This talk explores its role in the early months of the War of 1812, the strategic stakes for both the United States and Great Britain, and the events leading to its surrender in August 1812—along with a comparison of commanders William Hull and Isaac Brock, their strengths, and their decisions.
Lecture presented by Eden Mitchell, DHS Wayne County History Project Research Associate.
Part of the Detroit Historical Society Quad Anniversary Series.
The museum is open 5-8pnm with free admission.
