Join us for Embracing a City, an interactive discussion covering the impact that thirty years of bold partnerships, collaborations, and grantmaking by The Kresge Foundation have had in the city of Detroit. Led by author and award-winning Journalist John Gallagher, the panel includes community development specialists who have been on the front line of the change that has happened during this time. All attendees will receive a copy of the book.

John Gallagher, Author/Journalist, Moderator

John Gallagher is a veteran journalist and author whose book, “Reimagining Detroit: Opportunities for Redefining an American City,” was named by the Huffington Post as among the best social and political books of 2010. John also wrote Embracing a City: The Kresge Foundation in Detroit 1993-2023, which has been updated for The Kresge Foundation’s centennial. Gallagher is the business columnist for the Detroit Free Press. He joined the paper in 1987 to cover urban and economic redevelopment efforts in Detroit and Michigan, a post which he still holds. He is a 2017 inductee into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame.

Shamyle Dobbs, CEO Michigan Community Resources, Panelist

Shamyle Dobbs is Chief Executive Officer for Michigan Community Resources. A native New Yorker and graduate of New York University, Shamyle moved to Michigan in 2001 to complete her Master of Social Work at the University of Michigan and went on to receive a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University.

Sue Mosey, CEO Midtown Detroit, Inc. Panelist

Susan T. Mosey has been the executive director of Midtown Detroit Inc. (MDI) for thirty years. The nonprofit organization is responsible for community development, marketing, real estate, small business development, and arts programming within Detroit’s University Cultural Center and New Center districts – an area now known as Midtown.

Wendy Lewis Jackson, Managing Director, The Kresge Foundation Detroit Program, Panelist

Wendy Lewis Jackson is managing director for the Detroit Program. She leads The Kresge Foundation’s efforts to revitalize Detroit and to strengthen its social and economic fabric. Her work supports organizations providing economic opportunity for low-income people and addresses the needs of vulnerable children and families.
